The Khmer kings built number of very large lagoons or lakes to store water between rainy seasons. Over the centuries, the lakes have filled in with tree growth and silt, but are still visible. Without these these very large water storage basins, ,the palaces, temples and people could not have flourished during the time of the Khmer empire.
